The teams from @uitnorgesarktiske, @oceancensus and @rev_ocean have successfully dived to the Jøtul vent field.

These hydrothermal vents serve as extraordinary islands in the abyss, hosting unique species found nowhere else on Earth. The extreme environment of the Jøtul vent field offers a rare glimpse into the resilience and adaptability of life. Studying and protecting this site is crucial for understanding its ecological significance and the broader implications for biodiversity in the ocean.

Aurora ROV is being daily on this mission to collect water, sediment, biology, geology, and chemistry samples.

The vent field is a hydrothermally active area 3000 m deep, along the Knipovich Ridge. It was discovered in 2022 by researchers from the Universitetet i Bergen (UiB).

All the data from previous expeditions have brought us back to this location to get a better understanding of this extreme environment.

🌊 Our ongoing mission with Ocean Census and UiT

🌊 Our ongoing mission with Ocean Census and UiT- The Arctic University of Norway continues along the Knipovich Ridge, an area teeming with ecological significance in the Arctic Ocean. We are diving in the range of 3000 meters deep and exploring the seafloor, which hosts a mosaic of habitats harboring many unique marine lifeforms. The diverse topography, including pillow lavas and sedimented areas, provides an opportunity for us to sample and study these distinct species.

Despite the temperamental weather and imposing swells on the surface, the ROV team guided Aurora across the rugged terrain, meticulously collecting specimens and pushcores. We have the benefit of using the moonpool on RV Kronprinshaakon, which lets us operate in challenging conditions with precision and efficiency.

We will keep diving daily as conditions permit and continue exploring the deep basins, rift valleys, and rugged topography of this amazing area.

REV Ocean, together with @uitnorgesarktiske and @oceancensus , are heading north to support 36 world-class scientists who will be discovering new species in the Arctic and Barents Sea.

Scheduled from May 3 to May 31, the EXTREME24 expedition will leverage REV Ocean’s advanced deep-diving Aurora ROV and skilled support team to facilitate groundbreaking scientific exploration aboard the @havforskningen RV Kronprins Haakon.

The EXTREME 24 expedition is an excellent opportunity for the REV Ocean crew to operate under demanding conditions and fine-tune the performance of Aurora ROV ahead of its deployment on the REV Ocean vessel.
